CBD Frequently Asked Questions
All salves, creams, or other CBD based products discussed here are in relation to topical salves that are not intended for internal use.
Introduction to CBD
CBD (cannabidiol) is a naturally occurring compound found in the flower resin of cannabis sativa plants. It is one of over a hundred cannabinoids contained within cannabis plants. Other common therapeutic cannabinoids are CBG (cannabigerol) and CBN (cannabinol). Often, CBD is derived from hemp plants rather than from marijuana plants. This is because hemp plants are naturally lower in THC content, and generally much higher in CBD content.
CBD is a safe, non-addictive substance that does not make a person intoxicated. The reason CBD does not intoxicate you like THC is because of how the compound interacts with the different receptors in the brain and body. It has gained popularity for medical uses ranging from epilepsy to pain control to addiction treatment because of its safety profile and differing way of acting on the body, compared to THC.
Since CBD is therapeutically potent and non-intoxicating, it is a desirable treatment option for those who are cautious about trying cannabis products for the first time.
How Does CBD Work?
CBD primarily interacts with our bodies through our Endocannabinoid System (ECS). It does this by mimicking the effects of endogenous cannabinoids. Endogenous cannabinoids are naturally occurring compounds created in our bodies. It is now known that the ECS is globally involved in maintaining homeostasis in the body, and connecting all of the body’s organs and systems. Although the body has its own endogenous cannabinoids, plant-derived cannabinoids have been researched as potential therapeutic options in a variety of areas because of their modulation of the ECS.
The endocannabinoid system plays a critical role in regulating a broad range of physiological processes that affect our everyday experience, such as, mood, energy level, intestinal health, immune activity, blood pressure, bone density, glucose metabolism, how we experience pain, stress, hunger, and more. Therefore, if the endocannabinoid system is not functioning properly, then the consequence is usually a chronically deficient or overactive endocannabinoid system, which then can result in disease.
CBD Products
There are several types of CBD products available – tinctures, smokable flower, edibles, drinks, topicals, sprays, and powders, to name some. You can purchase CBD anywhere from gas stations to cannabis dispensaries. As long as the product does not have any THC in it, you can find it at local stores, as well as online. If the product also contains THC, then legally, it can only be sold in state-registered dispensaries.
It is great that we can easily get CBD, however, care must be taken when choosing products because there is still very little regulation in the market. Because of this, it is extremely important that consumers educate themselves on the proper way to choose CBD products.
Many studies have found inaccurate labeling of CBD products. These inaccuracies can include the amount of CBD within the product, transparency of other ingredients within the product, lack of credible certification, and lack of public safety testing. If these statements are not transparent on the labeling or packaging, then you may want to consider finding a more credible product. Non-certified products can also contain contaminants.
How to Take CBD
The rule of thumb with all cannabis products, psychoactive or not, is to:
Go Low and Slow (start with a low dose, and increase slowly)
Take Consistently and Regularly (twice a day is best)
Most certified products will have recommended dosing, but the real dose is the one that works for you. CBD is not like pharmaceuticals! And, there is no such thing as a ‘one size fits all’ when it comes to CBD.
Tincture, consumables (edibles and drinks) – start with ¼ of the recommended dose. Increase by ¼ dose every 3 days until you find YOUR sweet spot (the amount where you notice quality improvements in your condition.)
Smokables (flower and vapes) – start with only 1-2 puffs until you know how it affects you. Increase until you reach your sweet spot.
Topicals (salves, lotions, creams, etc.) – you can generally use as much topical as needed until condition is relieved.
How long will it take to start feeling the results?
Results will very from condition to condition with some patients seeing relief in one to two days with repeated use three to four times daily.
How should the salve be applied?
Rub salve on affected area massage too desired pressure for several minutes
How should it be stored?
The Zion CBD Salve should be stored in room temperature or below away from sun light. If left in hot temperatures for long periods of time the product may separate. To fix double boil the jar containing the salve until fully melted and vigorously stir for a few minutes, then let cool quickly.
